“Captain Frank Schelling, United States Navy. Welcome aboard the New Jersey, sir.”

McAuliffe glanced at himself in the mirror as he shook the captain’s hand. The last time he did that was in London, a lifetime ago. The guy in the mirror was a stranger, with wild hair and bloodshot eyes.

“Sit down, please.”

Schelling offered him the couch and McAuliffe dropped into it. “You got a drink?” The captain nodded, poured a couple of glasses of bourbon and handed one over. McAuliffe downed his in two quick swallows. Schelling refilled it and McAuliffe took a more measured sip this time, wiping the back of his hand across his mouth.

“My name is Terry McAuliffe, United States Ambassador to Great Britain.”

Schelling stared at him for several moments, and then he said, “This is getting stranger by the minute.”

“Do you know what’s happening, captain?”

Schelling shrugged. “All I know is the order to come rescue you. Plus, the small matter of DEFCON Three.”

“Jesus,” McAuliffe whispered. He took another slug of booze and set the glass back on the table between them. “Okay, so let me tell you how I got here. A few hours ago, the embassy in London was attacked. Wait, that’s not correct. It was assaulted.”

He saw Schelling frown.

“Excuse me, sir?”

“Let me explain.”

And McAuliffe did, spending the next fifteen minutes describing the attack and his hair-raising, shameful escape from London. “I need to know what happened to my people,” he finished. “I need to speak to Washington.”

Schelling pondered the request, excused himself. A few minutes later McAuliffe could feel the ship begin to move. Outside the captain’s window, the sky was black. When Schelling returned he had an update for McAuliffe.

“I’ve spoken to CINCLANT, sir. My orders are to get you home asap. I’ll have you escorted to your quarters. There’s a shower in there and I’ll have a crewman bring you some fresh clothes and some food. I’d like to get the doc to take another look at you too.”

“I’m fine.”

“It’s not a request.”

McAuliffe set his cup down, stood slowly, his aching limbs resisting the effort.

“Okay, but I have a request of my own.”

“What is it?”

“If you have a spare computer I’d like to file a preliminary report. A lot of good men died so I can be here now. I need to record as much detail as possible while it’s still fresh in my mind.”

Schelling nodded. “I’ll arrange it. Follow me, please.”

Outside in the gangway, a crewman waited to escort him. They’d only taken a few paces when McAuliffe said, “This is one of those stealth ships, isn’t it?”

“That’s correct,” Schelling confirmed.

“Are these things as fast as they say?”

Schelling nodded. “You’re about to find out.”
